WORK-LIFE BALANCE. Is It A Myth?

Updated: Nov 23

“Work-life balance was a mistake from the start. Because we don't really want balance. We want satisfaction.”—Matthew Kelly, author

Fitting It All In or Not?

Finding balance sounds ideal, but it is a sticky subject for many people, especially for the modern women. We have careers, partners, children, family commitments, charity work, classes, hobbies, worship time—plus, big desires to improve our health. How can one possibly balance so many things?

I’m going to let you in on a little secret here: YOU CAN'T... let me rephrase:

"You can do it all, just not all at once!" Betty Friedan

Sage advice, don't you think?! Having said that, it helps to reframe this concept. Think of your life as a delicious pie with slices to represent your Circle of Life. It's impossible to dedicate equal amount of time to all parts and do them all well. So instead, think about what is most important right now and focus your energy on these things.

Are you ready to get clear around your biggest struggle when it comes to balancing your life? Great, grab your journal and let's dive in!

Ready? Okay, here we go!

The struggle with finding balance really is a challenge of having realistic expectations of ourselves, of managing priorities and setting boundaries. These may sound simple but it actually takes a level of awareness to understand our personal limitations and the willpower to execute on setting clear priorities and boundaries. It also requires that you get absolutely clear on what you want your life to feel like, what you can use more of, and learn what has been holding you back.

To help you align with your intentions, here are some guiding questions:

  • What is a priority at the moment?

  • What are your limits - emotional, physical, mental, time, energy, resources?

  • What doesn't need to get done right now?

  • Where can you simplify, delegate, postpone or let go?

Begin to understand your personal limits, and set some boundaries that support your time, energy and well-being. Understanding your limits, managing your priorities and communicating your boundaries will help bring more harmony into your life.

“Harmony” is an easier goal than balance.

Harmony means everything is co-existing in a spirit of cooperation. But whatever you want to call it — harmony, balance, blend or “fitting it all in”— the secret is in understanding your limits, managing your priorities and setting your boundaries!

Give this journaling exercise a try and see how much more harmonious your life can be - no balancing required!
